The breath-takingly beautiful island nation of Saint Lucia has one of the most photographed coastlines in the world, offering fine sandy beaches and blue oceans set against the backdrop of dramatic jagged volcanos.
With so much raw natural beauty, it’s no wonder that travel fans are increasingly starting to choose Saint Lucia for once-in-a-lifetime holidays. Here’s a little more information about Saint Lucia, from where it got its name to what’s on offer for visitors.
Saint Lucia was named by the island’s very first inhabitants, the French, who were shipwrecked there in the late 1550s and later, in 1664, started a settlement there. Inspired by Saint Lucy of Syracuse, these early settlers made it the very first and only country to be named after a woman.
Saint Lucia is found in the West Indies, in the eastern Caribbean Sea where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The island, which only has fewer than 200,000 permanent inhabitants, is northwest of Barbados and to the south of Martinique.
Excitingly, Saint Lucia is a volcanic island. It is this that makes its scenery so very beautiful and unique, particularly the fact that it is more mountainous than other Caribbean islands. A standout feature is the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic spires which dominate the island’s skyline and are a World Heritage site. Elsewhere on Saint Lucia, you’ll find gorgeous hidden beaches and bays, old plantations, gardens, mineral baths and springs and much more.
Like other Caribbean islands, Saint Lucia has a tropical climate with beautiful sunshine and temperatures up to 29°C in the daytime. It also has a rainy season from June to November, so the best time to visit is mid-December to April when the weather is at its best.
In terms of where to stay on Saint Lucia, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The island is known for its many small, luxurious and colourful resorts, with a number of private, romantic places to stay. Some offer amazing coastal or mountain views, while others have their own private beaches, plunge pools, hammocks and more. If you’re taking the family, there are many excellent family-friendly hotels to choose from. For those looking for nightlife, Rodney Bay Village is the place to go.
Natural attractions are the order of the day on Saint Lucia. The volcanic scenery, lush greenery and brilliant beaches are why people love to visit the island. Among the many memorable experiences to be savoured on Saint Lucia include visiting the island’s capital Castries, as well as Pigeon Island National Park (home of Fort Rodney, and old British military base) and Sulphur Springs. You can also visit the island’s drive-in volcano, verdant botanical gardens and rainforests and, of course, find yourself the perfect spot to photograph ‘The Pitons’.
